Our review of recent entrepreneurship research identified several individual difference variables that seem to distinguish persons who choose to start new ventures from those who do not.
Given the positive impact social skills have on diverse human functioning and in many business contexts, it is surprising that entrepreneurship research has, at least until recently, directed little attention to this variable as a potentially important factor in new business formation.
In a sense, our reasoning is not entirely new; on the contrary, it echoes emerging themes in a wide range of current entrepreneurship research.
Similarly, a special issue of Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice published in 1994 included several "paradigm-expanding" papers which encouraged entrepreneurship researchers to assess individual- level processes in the entrepreneurship process (Garnter, Shaver, Gatewood, & Katz, 1994).
enter into individuals' decisions to become an entrepreneur and then, subsequently, shape their success in this role, is a potentially valuable task for entrepreneurship researchers.
